Challenges in Conservation Ecotourism
Question: Discuss about the Challenges in Conservation Ecotourism. Answer: Introduction A quick glance at the website of Australian Department of Environment and Energy makes one think that conservation is of great concern to both state and federal authorities. However, the dismal funding to ecotourism and conservation in general reveals something else. The current civilization is precipitating to a devastating effect on the worlds ecological system and Australia alike (Pye, 2016, pp. 1). Tourism is the epitome of current civilization and its wreaking havoc to pristine natural tourist areas. Over the years, local authorities and federal agencies have been mounting feeble campaigns on the need to conserve tourist sites and maintain their natural state; giving birth to the concept of ecotourism (Spies et al., 2012, pp.1-2). Unlike mass tourism, ecotourism emphasizes on recognizing the culture of the area or region of focus, the natural history of its setting without introducing changes to the integrity of the inherent ecosystem. According to Hobbs and Saunders, eds. (2012 , pp. 29), the wait for everyones participation in the reversal of the rapidly degrading ecology is long overdue. It entails the intrinsic wisdom and implied ethics that by transforming man from enemy to partner, the world would realize self-sustenance. For that reason, involving the tourists in the management and maintenance of the ecosystem is a positive input towards ensuring sustained conservation of the sites they visit. Ecotourism, even though appealing, is challenging to implement and uphold for various reasons explored in this essay. Explanation on Conservation Challenges One of the major challenges dragging Australia behind in its ecotourism conservation efforts is the lack of recognition of the importance of the abundant natural resources in the country. Australia is well endowed with natural gifts that remain untapped of their potential. In a conference held in Noosa, Queensland, it was noted that Australia rivals Costa Rica and New Zealand in natural resource endowment. The only difference is the lack of recognition of the value the ecological sites have in Australia. In addition, there is laxity from the side of the government in awareness creation of ecotourism benefits leading to the low adoption of ecotourism principles (Lindenmayer Gibbons (2012, pp. 1-4). Limited funding has also been a major deterrent to the development of Australian ecotourism sites. According to the Nature Parks Australia website, the government budget for ecotourism was $58 million in 2016. Over the years, the sector has been receiving considerably little amounts annually. It has been argued that the $58 million allocated was too little too late. Conservation of ecotourism parks is an expensive undertaking. The inadequacy of financial resources is likely to render the quarterly plans meaningless. Financing the training undertaken by guides is expensive. Inadequate funding translates to having fewer numbers of trained personnel and a subsequent reduction of the numbers of tourists admitted into the park. This has been reported as one of the most profound challenges park managers face (Spies et al., 2012, pp.1). Unlike New Zealand and Costa Rica, the Australian government has not enforced stricter standards and by-laws to regulate the practice of ecotourism. For example in Costa Rica, there are certain areas that are strictly out of bounds for visitors when not accompanied by trained guides. This has not been embraced in Australia and the consequent effect is a frequently disturbed natural ecosystem, thereby frustrating the conservation efforts (Dowling and Page, 2002, pp. 7). Similarly, the regulations limiting the number of tourists entering a park at a point in time have not been fully implemented. Implementing such regulations will require that the authorities get a better understanding on the maximum number of tourists each park can accommodate in full capacity per day. This is something the managements in various parks in Australia have not done. The long-standing history of ecotourism and improper management of parks reveals the absence of a thorough conservation plan. Literature review shows that conservation of the natural sites has followed a rather disorderly approach that involves sporadic short-term studies and implementation of inconsistent and ineffective recommendations to address the long-term needs of countrys ecosystem. Some studies done in the past have not candidly evaluated the countrys tourism resources since the early 1970s to arouse enough interest to catalog and classify all potential ecotourism sites (Dowling and Page, 2002, pp. 8). Subsequent studies focused on the impact of tourism and its multiplier effects. However, the impact assessment vital to creating environmental awareness and subsequent stratagems for conservation remain poorly researched, hence the perceived lack of basis for substantial budgetary allocations. Tourism multiplier effects tend to focus more on job creation and the general improv ement and welfare of the lives of local communities; these are all positive. The ecotourism will profit more increased growth if more studies were to focus on the ability of the management to utilize locally available resources in the conservation plan (Australia, 2011, pp. 56). Like many other countries, Australia conservation efforts have been plagued by antagonistic politics. Conservation interests perceive tourism as a valuable tool in conservation plans. On the other hand, tourism interests perceive conservation as means of developing and promoting tourism in the country. Conservation promoters have the desire to see more tourists locked out of the protected areas (Australia, 2006, pp. 12). This contrasts to tourism interests seeking to have more visitors in the restricted areas; thereby creating a stand-off in terms of approach and policies to be followed. Additionally, there are various minor divisions between various conservation interests in the private and the state controlled organisations which frustrate the conservations efforts. Similarly, disagreements have been registered between different tourism interests including commercial tour operators, non-state recreational groups and coordinators of different recreational activities (Buckley, 2004, pp. 76-78). Lastly, land tenure and use is a factor which has its roots in politics, both in the local and the global platforms. Australias parks are under government jurisdiction with the exception of parks occupying federal lands or co-managed by the state and the private sector. Some of the co-managed parks include World Heritage Areas as well as parks occupying Aboriginal lands. In addition, public forests are equally under the jurisdiction of the state just like provincial forests in Canada. Comparatively, the US is doing a commendable job in fronting its natural ecosystems as world tourist destination areas compared to Australia. Only Western Australia and Tasmania have intentionally encouraged tourism and tourism supporting activities unlike the six remaining states and regions. In this other states, the state forests are used for amusement in an informal way. This limits the governments hand in establishing formal management teams and financing of conservation activities (Davidson et al. , 2012, pp. 4). Integration of scientific evidence and insights While taking into account the local economic development, the state agencies need to augment the participation of indigenous communities within diverse ecotourism enterprises. Surveys in countries such as Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Nepal, have shown involvement of local groups in active ecotourism, living standards exponentially rise. The negative sociocultural impacts of ecotourism do not come as when they haphazardly affect the livelihoods of locals (Australia, 2011, pp. 58). Lack of data and minimal research in ecotourism has also been impeding conservation efforts in Australia. This has been associated with minimal spending by government on ecotourism management and conservation. Without adequate research, it is difficult for the Australian government to design rating systems for most of the self-proclaimed ecotourism operatives. In some countries, such systems are used to accord a ranking to each ecotourism operator, revealing the extent of environmental sensitivity in its activities. The absence of such a system makes it extremely harder for Australian ecotourism providers to align themselves with tour operators and other conservation agencies in their area of operation. In addition, minimal research has been cited as the main reason for the superficial approach to the marketing of ecotourism; further depressing conservation efforts in the country (Weaver, 2008, pp. 79). Conclusion In conclusion, acknowledging the importance of the abundant natural resources in Australia is important to sustenance, protection, and preservation of ecology and protection of Australias rich floral and faunal ecosystem. As such, Australian ecotourism programs must incorporate the locals in sensitizing ecotourists that even the most vaunted industrial and agricultural achievements draw their support from the ecology whose base is weakening on an annual basis. More benefits of a well-managed ecosystem are seen in increased possibility of local communities earning a livelihood because it promotes local ownership as well as the management and control of nearly every service used by the guests. Homegrown establishments and operatives serve the visiting people as opposed to foreign investment and management enterprises. As such, it is important for all the stakeholders to understand what environmental conservation is all about. It may comprise of tiny components that may be wrongly judge d insignificant. Above all, it is important for humanity to understand nature which is all about co-existence. According to the laws of nature, there is no such thing as individual life because there is no organism that can live on its own. It needs support from other organisms and the environment in general. The interaction between the many species of life as well as with their physical life yields the chemicals pivotal in supporting and sustaining life. This brings out the whole concept of symbiosis which advocates for the collectivity of cells, organs and even systems. Symbiotic relationships are fundamentally important because they support the existence of human beings both directly and indirectly. The inadequacy of financial resources is likely to render the quarterly plans meaningless. Financing and training of tour guides, though expensive needs to be given maximal attention to increase the numbers of trained personnel and a subsequent increase in the numbers of tourists admitted into the park at a point in time. A thorough conservation plan is also long overdue. As noted earlier, the approach given to conservation investigations is rather disorderly and sporadic short-term leading to inconsistent and ineffective redress of conservation efforts; translating research into actionable plans can help breach the gap. The land tenure and use rooted in politics needs an urgent redress to ensure that conservations efforts are not constrained. References Australia, E., 2006. American Son essays
American Son essays A Love between a mother and her child can be so strong that sometimes it is hard for one to express how they feel. A motherà ¡Ã ¯s love for her child is unconditional and so is the childà ¡Ã ¯s love for their mother. However, everybody expresses their love in different ways and sometimes the way one person expresses their love can hurt the other personà ¡Ã ¯s feeling even though it is not intentionally meant to hurt the person. Jonathan Kirsch from the Los Angeles Times writes about the American son, à ¡Ã °At every moment, at every level, Tomas and Gabe and their mother injure one another in intimate ways, even when they try to rescue each other.à ¡ This quote holds true for the mother and her son Tomas in the novel, The American Son by Brian Ascalon Roley. They both injure one another in intimate ways, even when they try to rescue each other. The novel takes place in the 1990à ¡Ã ¯s California. A mother comes with her two sons Tomas and Gabe from Manila and works two j obs to provide for them. Tomas the older son associates himself with Mexicans gangsters and breedà ¡Ã ¯s expensive attack guard dogs to help support the family who was abandoned by his father long ago. Tomas is always causing trouble and worrying his mother. The younger son Gabe is the good son but as he grows older he strays in the same pattern as his older brother Tomas. Tomas the older son is the son who helps pay the mortgage by selling attack dogs to rich people and celebrities. He is the son who keeps his mother up late with worry and who causes her embarrassment by showing up at family parties with his muscles covered in gangster tattoos and his head shaved down to stubble and his eyes bloodshot from pot. He is half white, half Filipino but dresses like a Mexican gangster that his mother does not like. He is also the son who says that if any girlfriend criticized his mother or treated her wrong he would knock the bitch across the house (15). Tomas seems to do thi...

Change in Congress Due To Republicans Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Change in Congress Due To Republicans - Essay Example A student testing for drugs for the first time may find it a rather daunting, and emotional experience, but they should be aware that they are not there to judge any of the subjects; nor the educational faculty. The student tester must be professional; impartial observation, amiability without familiarity, and also the ability to keep their focus in very testing circumstances. The student will be assessed in all of these areas, and also upon their ability to understand their role in the testing of teenagers, and the statistical likelihood that any student they meet will test positive for drugs. Drug testing is a contentious issue, with some seeing the Supreme Court's rulings in cases such as the Board of Education V. Earls (2002), as allowing a much broader invasion of student privacy than ever before; others argue that students should be required to submit to urine testing as part of the ever pressing war on drug use in America. As early as April 1999, Congress had been under increasing pressure to implement drug tests in schools, with Representatives arguing that: Increasing public concern about the nature of drug use in and around schools made the government choose a selective policy of urine testing to reassure parents that students were not taking drugs in class. It has been claimed that High School Senior Surveys shows a decline in drug use since the 1979, and that daily use of marijuana has fallen "From 10.3% to 4.0%" (Morgan, 1988). His conclusion, that marijuana use has slumped ("Declined significantly"), does not stem fear about student use of the drug, and this is what must be borne in mind when considering the role of routine urine testing in school admissions. Testing in Schools While many object to the use of random drug testing as a condition of admission to school, which is prohibited anyway as the school is a public body, this is not the case for extracurricular pastimes such as sports. The Supreme Court also noted that: Students are required to submit to physical examinations and Vaccinations which indicates that students have a lesser privacy interest than the general public.(Missouri Centre, 2002) Moreover, while there is some evidence that Drug testing of any kind, including for cause or suspicion, was not A significant predictor of Marijuana use." (Yamaguchi, et al, 2003ii) Routine drug testing is a standard procedure in sporting competitions and in the workplace: it should not therefore be seen as an over zealous requirement. "Drug-testing in schools and the workplace is not simply about individual behaviour" (Campbell, 2004, 86), it is, of course, also about the control that the school has over the children in its care. It is a school's responsibility to act as loco parentis and to enforce the law. Concerns over the invasion of a child's privacy during urine testing is dependant upon the idea of close observation of the child making the specimen, and then handing over this specimen to be tested by strangers (Boire, 2004). Of course, issues of trust also make things difficult: Routine drug testing implies, not merely that the tester mistrusts one student (Bailey, 1997, 5), but the entire generation. It may also make students more reluctant to participate in outside-hours activity - with the

How do we explain the development of intrastate or civil conflict Essay
How do we explain the development of intrastate or civil conflict - Essay Example Internal conflicts contribute to disruption of the existing infrastructure and depreciate economic development, which is highlighted in poor African countries with long recovery periods that adversely affect peopleââ¬â¢s economic, health and social wellbeing (Collier, 1998). The politics of a country may make unequal distribution of a countryââ¬â¢s resources and wealth, and this ultimately leads to violent rebellions against the rich and those in power. Armed civil conflicts are mostly common in the economically underdeveloped nations with high prevalence of joblessness, oppression, and injustice. The After Effects of European Colonialism The Berlin conference laid up the strategies for dividing Africa necessitating the creation of haphazard artificial boundaries. The large expanse of the African continent became a challenge for colonial administrators who lacked the manpower and resources to effectively rule the land (Shah, 2010). They used the divide and rule policy, which fe rmented numerous and disastrous conflicts. The boundaries colonialists created in Africa served their own economic interests. Colonialism erased entire cultures, and they way of life of many communities, most colonies were given minimal education, and religion to suit the Europeans needs (Shah, 2010). The postcolonial period proved difficult for Africans as the majority had useless skills unequipped for rebuilding their continent, coupled with people of diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultures crammed up together in depraved conditions. These people lacked the capacity to accommodate each other and develop nationalism that is exhibited in other parts of the world (Shah, 2010). Majority of the leaders that assisted Europeans to govern were ambitious and corrupt and they ruthlessly exploited their fellow Africans for their own gain. After independence, these people ascended to powerful political positions and to safeguard their positions majority used single party leaderships to rule. Single party leadership oppressed many citizens creating civil wars that led to assassinations and coups. These regimes are responsible for a majority of the civil wars experienced in Africa (Shah, 2010). Colonialists who introduced new cash crops directed the national economic activities of most developing countries. The Africans lost their native crops, which were suited to their climates and embraced foreign cash crops to serve the western markets exposing them to food insecurities (Shah, 2010). The nationalization of commercial cash crop farming and mineral mining in some regions make these people dependent on limited economic activities exposing them to fluctuating world market, prices increasing civil war risks. Africa constitutes very many ethnic communities and sub tribes that previously coexisted peacefully. The scramble for Africa by Europeans divided the continent and changed the structural life of Africans. Most colonialist governments promoted Darwinism, which elevated some communities and oppressed others leading to fundamental inequalities that have persisted to the current times. The Rwandese genocide arose from the tribal hierarchy left by the Belgium after Rwanda gained independence. They had made Tutsis

Kampung Desa Essay Example for Free
Kampung Desa Essay Life was a bed of roses for the villagers of Kampung Desa until a gang of robbers had fled from a police station near the village recently. They were on the most wanted list by the police since they had harmed victims before. Ever since their getaway, there had been abundant of reports involving robbery occurring in Kampung Desa. Most victims were unable to identify the culprits because they were wearing masks. The villagers of Kampung Desa had been warned by the police to stay on guard at all times. The villagers were beginning to worry. Some of them immediately installed home security alarms and grille to protect their homes. Due to this alert, the chief of the village, Pak Ali, had to take quick actions. He had no idea what to do. But he cannot give up because there is more than one-way to skin a cat. He discussed with all the villagers and made a conclusion to carry out patrols, which will take effect the following night. In order for this plan to work out, they need to unite and fight those robbers together. The chief also advised all villagers to inform the authorities of suspicious activities happening in their village. see more:forgiveness is divine On that night, a whistle was blown to call the men in the village to assemble in front of Pak Aliââ¬â¢s house. He divided them into groups. Each group will be on guard according to their shifts. They were very enthusiastic and promised not to sleep on the job. The chief noticed the absence of Pak Said, the villageââ¬â¢s foreman. He was puzzled. Pak Said never missed any of the villageââ¬â¢s activities even if he was ill. Pak Said is known to be very industrious. Pak Ali went over to Pak Saidââ¬â¢s house. It was as dark as a dungeon. Pak Ali man up and knocked on the door. Pak Said opened the door with a sour face. Pak Ali greeted him with a warm smile and asked why he did not join the night patrol. Pak Said furiously mocked the patrol by saying it was a waste of time and a wildcat scheme. Pak Ali was willing to compromise with him if he wanted an earlier shift. Of course, that made Pak Said even more enraged. Pak Ali explained that it would be unfair if he lets Pak Said slip away without any sensible reason because all the other men had participated. Pak Said proudly exclaimed that he has three strong sons to watch over his family through thick and thin. Then, he slammed the door before Pak Ali could say anything. Eventually, Pak Ali had to give up. But deep inside his heart, he scorned Pak Said. Who would have thought that his best friend would be so arrogant and self-centered? How could such a man feel no remorse? Nobody knew the robbers were lurking in the dead of the night behind Pak Saidââ¬â¢s house. Just as Pak Ali left his house, the robbers were already eyeing on the unlocked door. Pak Said had forgotten to lock his front door after talking to Pak Ali. Pak Said, his wife and his three sons were already sailing in the sea of dreams. This gave an opportunity for the robbers to easily enter his house without anybodyââ¬â¢s acknowledgement. Unfortunately, the robbers did not find any valuable goods in the living room, kitchen, dining room nor the storeroom. They were dissatisfied and decided to use force. The careless Pak Said did not lock his bedroom door either. This was indeed like a warm welcome to the robbers. They managed to tie up his wife. He quickly became aware of the robbers. Thanks to his spinal reflex, he bolted out of the room when he had the chance and deliberately ran into his sonsââ¬â¢ room. His sons attempted to ambush the robbers. However, the robbers outnumbered them and hit them with a vase until they were knocked out. Pak Said was filled with terror after witnessing the apples of his eyes battered. He was on thin ice at that moment. He had no other choice than to call for help from the patrols. He was wiling to sacrifice his pride for the safe keep of his familyââ¬â¢s lives. He screamed for help. To his disbelief, someone heard him and spontaneously blew a whistle. A crowd of people ran toward Pak Saidââ¬â¢s house. The robber were frightened of getting caught, so they deserted their loot and hastily ran away but the crowd was able to seize them in the nick of time and tied them to a pole. A stitch in time saves nine. Those brutal robbers could have taken the lives of Pak Saidââ¬â¢s family. The police department was straight away notified. Pak Said dashed out of his house and begged someone to call for an ambulance because his sons were severely injured. Pak Ali, whom he ridiculed, called an ambulance even after Pak Said bad-mouthed him earlier. Pak Said was in awe. He was ashamed of what he had said to Pak Ali. He apologised to Pak Ali and all the other villagers for what he had said about them. He should have think before he speaks. He now perceived the real meaning of unity and is forever in great debt for what the villagers had done for him. They all forgave him because to err is human and to forgive is divine.

El Mercado :: essays research papers
à à à à à EL MERCADO à à à à à The Mexican Mercado is a historical, sociable, and wonderful experience. I believe it says a lot about Mexico's culture and how they have kept some of the ways of there ancestors. The Mercado is a thing that should be highly respected. Many things are related to the Mercado like bargaining, communicating, making friends, shopping, and agriculture. That right there describes Mexico's history and present. à à à à à In the US I believe that people usually don't like to socialize as much as people in Mexico than people in the US. That is half of the reason people in Mexico go to the Market. People in Mexico like to negotiate prices and people in the US seem to be in more of a hurry. The US and Mexico have supermercados which are pretty similar to each other because they sell a lot of the same things. The traditional Mercado is an open-air market, which is similar to some of the farmers markets that the US has. Except people in Mexico have bigger markets and they have a bigger variety of stuff. They aren't as popular in the U.S. because of the differences in the history of the cultures. I think a lot of people would like to bring open-air markets to the US. à à à à à Some advantages of the Mercado is being able to visit and get to know more people. There are also many shops with many varieties of things to choose from. Stores for everyone, they have flower shops, craft markets and many other shops. A disadvantage I would think is that it would always be crowded. I consider this a disadvantage, but there are some people that wouldn't. I'm not sure how fresh the fruits would be either, because you don't know how long they have been sitting there. Some advantages for the U.S. markets would be having the out-of-date prints on the things you buy and knowing that your fruit is fresh. Plus you have a better chance of getting a refund. Some disadvantages are not being able to negotiate with people for lower prices. In the US the grocery shopping isn't as much about visiting and talking, but getting your shopping done quickly because people are always in a hurry. à à à à à à à à à à The Mercado was started by the Aztecs, this cultural activity is historical and a wonderful experience.

The Negatives Of Genetic Engineering
The term ââ¬Å"genetic engineeringâ⬠was first coined by Jack Williamson in is science fiction novel Dragon's Island, published in 1 951 ,one year before Dona's role in heredity was confirmed by Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase, and two years before James Watson and Francis Crick showed that the DNA molecule has a double-helix structure, DNA stands for (desorbing cultic acid). For many years, there has been a controversy surrounding the morality of genetic modifying organisms. Some it's unethical since it may lead to side effects such as mutation, others say it's totally acceptable since it can make a stronger healthier and smarter organism. I tryingly believe that genetic engineering should be banned for multiple reasons such as religion, morals, physical attributes and crossing species boundaries. In every country there is different religions and these religions have different views. One of these views are on genetic engineering, whether it is acceptable or not modifying genes. God created us human not perfect so why do we want to reach perfection when it is not a human trait. Other people who lack faith will tell you humans seek perfection it's in their nature so it's k modifying genes, but if we reached perfection what do we have to seek, we loud be perfect and lose our touch of humanity. Is genetic engineering ethical to do, children who are made with specific genes are produced for one specific reason and it is to help another person medically in other words they are made for being spare for the specific person. In my sister's keeper a book about a girl who was a genetically modified to help her dying sister from cancer for 12 years she was used as a spare for her sister and when they wanted to take a kidney, she took matter in her own hands and sued her parents for emancipation. So it is not moral or right to bring a person just to be spare. Although other people will contradict and say that by doing so they are saving lives, but they don ;t think of t he lives they are destroying .Gene modifying is not a 100% accurate, it has many mishaps one of the mishaps is a chronic disease which happened in 2001 at a reproductive facility in new jersey were thirty babies who are genetically modified and have genes of three different people, two women and a man some of these thirty children had turners syndrome and turners syndrome happens to one in very 2500 baby and in thirty babies it occurred more than twice is alarming. There people contradict that genetic modification has many benefits, like it increases polymorphism but what about mutations that occur in the children that born. Are they supposed to live with disabilities because some scientists wanted to play god. What about modifying genes to create a new species, are we ready to see a new type of species walking around with us, scientists are talking about a new kind of humans that have the outer look of humans and the abilities of animals, do we want a human tiger that may be aggres sive and be a hazard to other normal humans?

Abstract The research question of this Psychology Extended Essay is ââ¬Å"What is the Extent of the Mediaââ¬â¢s Influence Regarding Eating Disorders?â⬠To further investigate this question, I researched what the media is and what it does, how people are affected by the media and many different studies and experiments. Through the use of several sources, mostly online and experiments, I was able to learn exactly what the media does to possibly be considered an influence on the development of eating disorders. I was able to find a multitude of experiments and studies deciding whether or not women are actually influenced by what the media has to say about body image. The media has become an essential part of men and womenââ¬â¢s lives for years, dating all the way back to before World War II in the late 1930ââ¬â¢s. It was said to be that the media during this time injected ââ¬Å"values and morals into societyâ⬠(Jade). In todayââ¬â¢s society, there are several different types of social groups. Some of the social groups may be effected by the media and how they portray the perfect woman and some may not be effected because they may ââ¬Å"reject the messages that are not consistent with the values of that groupâ⬠(Jade). There are also several different types of people in this world, some of whom have very low self-esteem or confidence and are therefore affected more by what the media says than others with a higher self-esteem. The media ââ¬Å"contributes to a toxic environment in which eating disorders may be more likely to occur. This is because of the ââ¬Å"Damaging Paradoxâ⬠of modern society in which the media promotes,â⬠(Jade). While this is happening, the environment is also providing people with an array of food that is high in calories and in fat and the media is pressuring men and women to eat the products and as a result, they are becoming heavier and heavier (Jade).
